Waking up in your own little beach house

Hello awesome birthday surprise! It seems that all our holidays lately involve a tiny little beach house to compensate for the city landscape, so I should’ve seen this surprise coming (I didn’t). You always want what is not yours…

Last week I had no idea what we were going to do for my birthday – I felt like a nine year old (I loved it)! No planning, no nothing. It was exactly what I needed as my week was pretty hectic and I didn’t have any time to think about any birthday plans. Normally we flee the country, but after visiting another country each month and leaving next week for France as well… Let’s just say you can overdo traveling as well.

So after being blissfully unaware I walked into our own little beach house, directly on the beach of The Hague. I forgot how beautiful the Dutch beaches are! When walking down to the beach, we saw the white cabins on their sturdy metal legs, leaning against the sand dunes and looking out towards the sea. Yep, pretty cool. After climbing the tiny stairs to the wooden deck, we opened the glass door to beach luxury: lounge couch, fluffy bed and an unobstructed view of the sea. We even got to meet the owners and talked a bit about their journey of realizing the Haagsestrandhuisjes. It took them seven years to realize these 20 houses! Determination is everything…

We’re glad they succeeded as it was one of the most relaxing weekends we had since a long time! Even though my birthday surprise included a kite lesson… From a distance kite surfers look so incredibly cool, but I managed to dissolve any coolness surrounding the sport. After struggling to not continuously crash the kite (and seeing Leon fly it like it like a pro), it was time to hit the water. I think it’s safe to assume I’m one of the most terrible kite surfers (maybe since ever) as I had not an inkling of kite-intuition in my body. Our teacher was this cool relaxed girl and one time she was dragging behind me while we were getting a good taste of the sea, shouting: “LEFT! RIGHT!”. Poor girl…

Really wished I was a bit better and didn’t end up freezing in my wetsuit and three layers of protective gear (I looked like a blue popsicle, I though it was not possible but I managed to further emphasize my not-coolness). But after a long shower and waking up to the sounds of the waves the next day, I’m thinking about lesson #2.

If you’re looking to expand business Haagsestrandhuisjes: I’m all up for a beach house / kite course combo. Just saying.

If you want to book a beach house at the Haagstrandhuisjes, be quick. I saw they are fully booked this Summer, but you have a better chance this September and October.
